New COVID-19 cases top 700 in B.C.

For the first time since Jan. 7, B.C.’s new COVID-19 cases topped 700, with 737 reported today. The province’s cumulative total has reached 90,786 cases.
Of the new cases, 163 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 426 in the Fraser Health region, 32 in the Island Health region, 33 in the Interior Health region, 82 in the Northern Health region and one new cases of a person who resides outside of Canada.
There are 5,207 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 292 people are hospitalized, 85 of whom are in intensive care. A further 9,412 people are under active public health monitoring.
Health authorities reported 68 new confirmed cases that are variants of concern, bringing B.C.’s total to 1,200 cases. Of those, 149 cases are currently active. Of the total cases, 1,094 are the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, 41 are the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and 65 are the P.1 (Brazil) variant.
To date, 490,022 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,139 of which are second doses.
Sadly, there were two new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,421.
There were no new healthcare facility outbreaks reported today, and one existing outbreak was declared over. Outbreaks continue at five long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and eight acute care facilities.
